Milwaukee LGBT Center Continues Move

Press Release July 12, 2008 In its ongoing effort to streamline operations and focus on its core mission of improving the quality of life of LGBT citizens, the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center has ended its formal affiliation with Center Advocates, Inc. The resolution passed by the Board recognizes the need for the Community Center to put its energy into its direct mission, especially in these troubling economic times.
“During this six-year relationship, Center Advocates has been instrumental in successfully advancing LGBT issues,” noted Board Co-Chair Sheldon Walker. “Together, we fought and won on important issues like a domestic partner registry, protections for gender identity and gained greater visibility for LGBT citizens. We are proud of our accomplishments, but recognize the need for a formal relationship is over.”
As part of its affiliation agreement, the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center has appointed 51% of the Advocates Board, and provided office space, materials, and staffing which Center Advocates reimbursed through a Resource Allocation Agreement.
After careful consideration, the Board of Directors determined the Community Center must focus the resources it has on services and programs to best support the mission. “We think Center Advocates has sufficient experience and history to move forward on its own, and we wish them well,” stated Board Co-Chair Sue Haertel.
Earlier this summer, the Community Center announced a hiring freeze recognizing the need to strengthen its financial position. The Board is committed to ensuring the agency continues its outstanding work in the community for decades to come. “Improving the quality of life for LGBT youth and adults in our community through our many programs must be our first priority,” Walker and Haertel added, “and we must be good stewards of our resources.”
Through Project Q, the Anti-Violence Project, and our HIV program, LGBT community members have a strong and effective advocate in times of need. The Center’s library, social programs like Mix n Mingle, and new Health and Wellness Initiatives provide Milwaukee’s LGBT community with opportunities for enjoyment and education.
“In these challenging economic times, the Community Center made a tough but appropriate decision that focuses its resources on its primary mission of programming and services,” said Dr. Gary Hollander of Diverse and Resilient, Inc. “The essential activities of Center Advocates should not be adversely affected by this move.” Diverse and Resilient, which helps build capacity in LGBT leaders and organizations throughout the state, has worked with the Community Center in a variety of program development and planning areas.
